Auricular Acupuncture

What is Auriculotherapy?

I trained in London to learn auriculotherapy and gained outstanding marks in all of my studies. Auriculotherapy is almost the same as 'ear acupuncture' but needles are not used, the acupuncture points are stimulated by electronic means, palpation or laser and this has an effect which has been scientifically proven to have a longer lasting effect.

Auriculotherapy, or auricular therapy, or ear acupuncture, or auriculo-acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine based on the idea that the ear is a micro system which reflects the entire body, represented on the auricle, the outer portion of the ear.

Conditions affecting physical, mental or emotional health are assumed to be treatable by stimulation of the surface of the ear exclusively.

Similar mappings are used in many areas of the body, including the practices of reflexology and iridology.

These developments were made using clinical trials based on a method of projection of a fetus on the ear for reference of complaints and points for treatment.

What is Auriculotherapy used for?

This is the recommended treatment for addictions and dependencies. Primarily used for weight loss, giving up smoking, alcohol, drugs and substance abuse. The treatment helps with detoxification and has a calming effect, enabling better rationalisation and control of behaviour. However, it has been proven to be as effective as body acupuncture for general health issues.

Auriculotherapy is most popularly used to treat substance abuse and chronic pain. Some hospitals offer auriculotherapy for post-operative pain management. Some detox centers provide auriculotherapy for the treatment of drug addiction.

Auriculotherapy can and should be used to maintain health and promote recovery from almost any condition. Uses of auriculotherapy based on tradition or theory include addiction, adrenal disorders, analgesia, chronic pain, high blood pressure, inflammation, musculoskeletal disorders, pain, relaxation, sciatica, stress, and swelling. Advocates claim that because of the wide range of point functions and locations on the ear, auriculotherapy has a promising future alongside conventional Western treatment of nearly every condition.

What happens in a treatment?

A medical history and lifestyle questionnaire is filled out to ensure treatment is safe for the client. A 'prescription' is drawn up to work the appropriate points and then each point is stimulated in the same order in each ear. Any particularly reactive points are addressed and treatment is concluded.

This treatment is offered as a non-needling technique. Electronic stimulation, palpation or laser can be used as effective methods of stimulating the various acupuncture points on the ears with benefits lasting longer than the usual needling techniques. This is also a much 'safer' method as the skin is not pierced and, therefore, the risk of infection through the breaking of the skin is eliminated.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

The number of treatments depends on the client and the condition and will be discussed in the initial consultation process. The number of treatments needed depends on the particular individual but issues can be resolved relatively quickly with this method. A once a month 'top up' treatment is recommended for certain conditions once a condition has been brought into an acceptable state.
